Jackalope Labs is a one-woman show. Candy Jean lives and adventures in the great Pacific Northwest, and will be using this tumblr to share sweet custom gear, tasty outdoors recipes, trip reviews, and tips and tricks for increasing your enjoyment of the great outdoors. She will also be updating regularly about her training to climb Kilimanjaro in 2014.
Great little overnight visit to Alsea Falls for our 2nd Anniversary. Worked it in my new hiking skirt, showing off my -5 pounds. Plus a great vegetable tin foil stew for dinner :)
The training calendar. On day 6 already! The first 100 days are devoted to weight loss and building cardio fitness. After that, altitude training shall commence!
I am climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro for BCM a nonprofit organization that offers therapeutic recreation experiences to young people aged 13-18, which help them to learn life skills and human skills in a natural setting. Over the next 19 Months I will be raising $8500 dollars, 77% of which goes directly to the kids. Help me raise awareness for this program, and make me climb a 19,000 foot peak. Every single penny counts!
Kilimanjaro
Big news Tumblr: I am training (ahem, working my fat ass off) for a 2014 summit of Mt Kilimanjaro! Pretty soon I’ll begin fundraising. The funds go towards “Summit For Someone”, to benefit at risk youth and pay for them to participate in therapeutic recreation programs. I’ll be updating pretty regularly with my fitness project, and once my fundraising stuff is all squared away, I hope you’ll consider supporting me!
This past weekend V and I were planning on an epic backpacking trip in the Gorge. We bought him a new pack and everything. But alas….SNOW!
So, in a last ditch effort to get outdoors, we settled for a trip to Eola State Park—A Day use park, with a surprising feature.
Hiker Camp!
After a short 1.25 mile hike (admittedly a sucky one—-very steep uphill the entire way!) you reach hiker camp, a first come first serve set of cabins and a huge firepit. The cabins are rustic, with four wooden bunks and a canvas door, but are super well constructed. As Ecola is a huge surfer haven, there was a really fun crowd, and we enjoyed sharing libations and good conversation.
There is also a side hike where you can see an old WWII Radar station as well as a gorgeous view of Tillamook Head Lighthouse.
So, while over all we probably only hiked about 3.5 miles this weekend, it was an amazing trip!
Our 2012 Goal
Is to hike 500 miles before the end of the year. An ambitious goal, but totally accessible. This will lead to new wilderness recipes and lessons for this little old tumblr too!
So far:
2/12 Cascade Head 4.5 miles
3/4 Peavy Arboretum 4.2 miles
3/11 Eagle Creek 4.5 miles
Current total: 13.2 Miles
Not too shabby for one month of winter! More soon.
Hiking Goals!
We’ve set some hiking goals for ourselves for the year! We’re shooting for 500 miles this year….and I, personally think we can beat it! Our first hike of 2012 coming this weekend!
